The true Self as Spiritual Consciousness cannot be known with the mind as the mind is only equipped to know that which has form. The mind - which is merely a bundle of thoughts put together collectively into and as the Subconscious Aka Human Soul, must first be purified and stilled through meditation and mindfulness before the Self can be known.
Every thought you have fills the subconscious with one belief or another. These emotive beliefs (For the Subconscious is all about feeling rather than thinking), in turn cause thoughts to rise out of the Temple (Subconscious) which will as I previously stated, fill the Subconscious reinforcing or creating new beliefs. Can you see how a negative feedback loop is formed causing us to reincarnate lifetime after lifetime? These beliefs act as filters that diminish distort and delay the purity of light shining from the true Self as it flows through the Mind and out into the world. Therefore, the Subconscious has to be purified which is done a number of ways.
Firstly 'physically living' whereupon our Subconscious is manifested as the present moment, giving us as the Conscious Mind, (Thought) the chance to make conscious what is unconscious, thereby experiencing what is true for us and what is not. This gives us the chance to change what is not working. Secondly shadow work of some type such as psychology or hypnotherapy etc that delves into the Subconscious - pain-body looking for healing. Thirdly and the most effective is meditation and mindfulness. Keeping the Mind still, keeps the Conscious Mind (That which we think with) in the Subconscious (Human Soul) where the Light of Spirit enters the Mind. The light from the conscious Mind acts like a magnifying glass that burns away the impurities Aka Vasana's or Subconscious Tendencies that hinder us giving us greater clarity of Mind, while at the same time, allowing the Conscious Mind (Thought) to rest in peace within the Subconscious which both kills the Ego while preventing anymore Karma.
The true Self can only be known once the Mind has ceased and is pure. Only a still mind can act like a mirror allowing ourselves as Atman Aka Buddha or Christ (Awareness) to recognize itself - liberating us from the notion of being Mind, while at the same time realizing we are Brahman Aka God itself. Once realization of the true Self is experienced, we are liberated from Egoism for good.
