Suffering, though painful, ultimately serves a virtuous purpose. It gives us a start. A fright. A wake-up call. No one wakes up in a dream. It's only in nightmares that we wake up to ourselves.

So, to continue quoting Bette again, when suffering...

"Just remember in the winter Far beneath the bitter snow Lies the seed that with the sun's love In the spring becomes the rose" Take heart, like all seasons, suffering too will pass. Life is happening for you, not to you.
