"Under the influence of great fear, almost everybody becomes superstitious.
Collective fear stimulates herd instinct, and tends to produce ferocity towards those who are not regarded as members of the herd.
Fear generates impulses of cruelty, and therefore promotes such superstitious beliefs as seem to justify cruelty.
Neither a man nor a crowd nor a nation can be trusted to act humanely or to think sanely under the influence of a great fear." ~Bertrand Russell

Think of the mind as a hypnotist that causes you to believe what is not real is real. Derren Browne for example once hypnotized a group of people on the stage so that they could not recognize the colour black. While on stage a person dressed all in black came and took their drinking glass away. To the people under the hypnotists spell, it looked like the glasses were floating in mid air and nothing you could say would convince them otherwise because seeing is believing right? They saw it with their own eyes! This is the mind - the mind which causes you to see false evidence appearing real...F.E.A.R. - False Evidence Appearing Real.
Fear is felt when we know that something is not right but we cannot put our finger on it or when we know something is not right and we have no solution to it. Fear is felt when we have no understanding of what is happening.
How does fear dissipate and reality reasserted?
For your amusement and to demonstrate why the Mind should never be taken seriously or to heart UNLESS it is One with the true Self that keeps it pure and clear through 'right understanding' and 'Present Moment Awareness'
